KUKA KRL for VS Code v1.9.+: From a Syntax Highlighter to a Full Industrial Engineering Toolkit

Hello fellow roboticists and automation engineers!

A couple of months ago, I introduced the first version of the KUKA KRL Extension for VS Code. Back then, it was mostly a comfortable code editor with custom themes, basic linting, and snippets to replace Notepad++ and OrangeEdit.

Since then, based on real commissioning feedback from automotive lines and industrial cells, the project has undergone a massive architectural overhaul. In v1.9.+, it is no longer just an editor — it is a full-fledged offline engineering and diagnostic environment for KUKA KSS 8.3–8.7 and iiQWorks.

Here is what was added and why it completely changes day-to-day workflow with KUKA robots:

1. Live Transparent ZIP Backup Mount & 2-Way Auto-Sync
No more extracting 50 MB archives into temporary folders and repacking them manually.

Open .zip directly as a workspace: Simply open any Robot_Archive.zip or KRCDiag_*.zip. The extension mounts it into VS Code with your project tree and auto-opens Cell.src.
Transparent In-Memory Patching (<80 ms): Whenever you hit Ctrl+S, changes are transparently patched directly back into the autentic .zip archive on disk without file locks or full repacking.
Archive Explorer (Zero-Unpack): Instant virtual in-memory inspection of files via krc-archive:// protocol.
6D Coordinate Delta Math: Compare two backup archives side-by-side to see coordinate drift (ΔX, ΔY, ΔZ, ΔA, ΔB, ΔC in mm and degrees) between teaches.

2. KRL Safe Auto-Repair Engine (QuickFix & Fix-All)
Deterministic one-click fixes (Ctrl+. lightbulb or Fix All) for programming hazards before loading to the robot:

Missing BRAKE before RESUME: Injects mandatory BRAKE deceleration before RESUME inside collision and sensor interrupt routines.
Uncommitted Payload Dynamic Data: Automatically inserts BAS(#PAYLOAD, nTool) commit calls after multi-attribute $LOAD assignments.
BOM & Non-ASCII Purge: Strips invisible UTF-8 BOM markers and non-standard typographical characters that crash the KSS compiler.
Loop & FOLD Recovery: Fixes dangerous FOR ... STEP 0 infinite interpreter loops and re-synchronizes broken ;FOLD / ;ENDFOLD boundaries.
Safety Rollback & Monaco Diff Review: Preview exact red/green line diffs before accepting changes. If any AST regression is detected, the transaction is automatically rolled back.

3. 16+ Industrial Static Safety Gates & KSS Compiler Parity
The background scanner continuously audits your workspace against official KUKA specifications:

Status (S) & Turn (T) Validator: Checks 6-axis Turn bitmasks (0..63) and Status (0..7). Automatically enforces Status S = 2 ('B010') on 4-axis palletizer robots (KR 300 PA, KR 470 PA, etc.) to prevent special configuration faults.
Vorlaufstopp (Advance Run Breaker) Detection: Flags subprogram calls and I/O reads breaking the continuous advance pointer between C_DIS / C_PTP approximation points.
SUBMIT Interpreter Rules: Strictly forbids robot motion commands (PTP, LIN, CIRC) inside sps.sub and verifies ROBOT_STOP() usage.
Manipulator Dynamics & Overload Check: Cross-checks $config.dat LOAD_DATA against nominal arm payload from $TRAFONAME.
Hardware I/O Range Checks: Validates hardware limits for $IN/$OUT [1..4096/8192], $FLAG [1..1024], $TIMER [1..64], and $CYCFLAG.
SRC <-> DAT Integrity: Matches KUKA compiler error catalog parity (KSS01412, KSS01413, KSS01422, KSS01425) for unlinked module headers and missing point declarations.

4. 6D Kinematics & Trajectory Engineering
Full 4x4 Homogeneous Transformation Matrix math right inside the IDE:

Trajectory & Point Mirroring: Mirror paths across X, Y, or Z Cartesian planes with automatic recalculation of Turn bitmasks (T XOR 32, 40, 48) so robot wrists don't unwind 360°.
6D Batch Point Shift: Shift selected coordinates via Tool Offset (P : ΔF), Base Offset (ΔF : P), or Cartesian Delta vectors with live Monaco Diff preview.
Trajectory Reversal: Inverts motion path backwards with intelligent auxiliary/target point swapping for CIRC / SCIRC arcs.
Tool & Base Coordinate Inspector: Scans TOOL_DATA, BASE_DATA, and LOAD_DATA with one-click export to CSV spreadsheets.

5. Modern KRL & Fleet Tools

Official KUKA.Sim 4.10 System Variables: Autocomplete and full typing for over 950 system variables ($POS_ACT, $AXIS_ACT, $TORQMON, etc.) with German physical units and array dimensions.
iiQKA Spline Modernizer: Wrap legacy motions into modern SPLINE blocks with automated $TORQMON collision guard frames.
KRCDiag Inspector: Inspect native controller diagnostic packages and parse KrcLog.evt / KrcLogS.evt logs directly inside VS Code.
Interactive Control Center: Direct one-click access to 70+ utilities, calculators, and diagnostic switches.
